The Olana Partnership is organizing its first Olana Travellers Club excursion – a day trip to trace Frederic Church’s roots in Hartford, CT. Hartford was the birthplace, childhood stomping grounds, and final resting place of Frederic Church and his family. See flyer.
The trip takes place on Saturday, April 16, 2016. The coach bus will leave from the Wagon House Education Center at 7:30 a.m. and return from Hartford at approximately 6:00 p.m.
Participants will arrive in Hartford at 10:00 a.m. to first make a pit stop at the Charter Oak Tree monument to see the site of the historically significant tree that Church frequently painted. Next stop, the Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art where guides will lead an hour-long Hudson River School and landscape painting tour.
After break time for lunch, a tour of The Mark Twain House will follow. Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, was a colleague of Church and a visitor to Olana. His home depicts many of the same 19th century’s Aesthetic Movement influences that can be found at Olana. The trip will end with a walking tour of the Church family graves led by Hartford, CT historian and genealogist, Mary Falvey.
