A New Resource for Gallatin Residents – Town Maps in Google Earth

The Town of Gallatin is at the cutting-edge of a technology revolution when it comes to offering new Google Earth maps that help residents, the town and first responders understand everything from topography and property boundaries to historic places and water sources.

Funded by a grant from Hudson River Valley Greenway, councilman John (Fraser) Paterson, Lisa Deleeuw and the vision of the Town Board have guided an initiative to bring town maps into the 21st century.  By documenting town features and resources in Google Earth, residents now have access to 3D satellite-based maps through Gallatin’s Townhub website and a dedicated computer in the town hall.

Click on Maps on the front page of the the town’s website to view static pdfs derived from the Google Earth maps or download Google Earth and the first few interactive maps on the site.  By opening these files, residents can watch as Google Earth journeys to Gallatin and highlights key features.  Residents can then zoom in to see specific areas.

“We’re the first town in this area to use this technology to provide residents the ability to view and engage with interactive maps in Google Earth,” said Paterson.  “Some of the immediate benefits of hosting this information on the website include making it easier for first responders to locate water sources and for residents to understand boundary lines and flood plains.”
