Columbia County Update

FROM: Chairman Matt Murell

SUMMER CAMPS EXECUTIVE ORDER DENIED

Columbia County has learned that the Executive Order it sought last month from the New York State Department of Health requesting that summer camps remain closed during the COVID-19 crisis has been denied, Board of Supervisors Chairman Matt Murell said on Saturday.

In consultation with the Columbia County Health Department and the County Attorney’s office, Chairman Murell said that despite the state’s decision, county DOH and county leaders stand behind their strong recommendation that summer camps not operate until further notice.

“The thinking at this time is that summer camps with children and counselors cannot properly maintain the social distancing necessary to keep everyone safe,” said Chairman Murell. “With that in mind, we sincerely hope that summer camps remain closed until such time as health officials deem it safe.”

SATURDAY’S STATEWIDE COVID-19 SNAPSHOT

As of Saturday morning, said Columbia County Director of Emergency Management David W. Harrison, Jr., New York State reported that 1,121,543 tests for COVID-19 had been administered statewide. Of that number, 330,407 yielded a positive result. There are currently 8,196 individuals hospitalized, with 604 newly hospitalized. At this time, statewide 21,045 have died from the virus.

COLUMBIA COMEBACK COMMITTEE SETS MONDAY MEETING

On Monday at 1 p.m., Columbia Comeback – the committee recently established by Chairman Murell comprising leaders from the local business and political world – will conduct its first meeting. The meeting is open to the public and can be accessed via a link on the Columbia Economic Development Corporation (https://www.columbiaedc.com) website. “Columbia Comeback represents a significant step as local businesses prepare for opening,” said Chairman Murell. “Everyone recognizes the difficulties facing businesses as they attempt to get back on their feet – we think those looking forward to resuming business activities will benefit from this important resource.”
