The Warren Street Project – Historic Hudson celebrates its twentieth anniversary with an exhibition of The Warren Street Project, a photographic inventory of Hudson’s main street by Lynn Davis, first exhibited at Historic Hudson’s inaugural event held at the Carrie Haddad Gallery in 1996. Lynn Davis photographed every building on Warren Street over the course of several years. Twenty years later, this monumental series tells a remarkable success story for historic preservation. Grant Gordy & Ross Martin – with The Lucky 3 opening – Gordy and Martin’s musical relationship began with jam sessions and evolved until it led to “Year of the Dog,” the release of which they will be celebrating at Helsinki Hudson. Their repertoire ranges from fiddle tunes to jazz standards, and from original compositions to traditional hymns to Bach, “each piece is like another paragraph in an ongoing musical conversation.” – Gordy is best known for having held the guitar chair in the David Grisman Quintet for six years. Fifth Annual Olana en plein air event & Quick Draw – The Hudson River Valley is famous for its landscape painters. From Thomas Cole to Frederic Church this area was the creative powerhouse of America’s first art movement. Today the tradition of landscape painting is just as strong. Witness “history in progress” as twenty-two artists paint the Olana landscape. The artists have been competitively selected by a panel consisting of Bob Bahr, editor of Plein Air Today,Valerie Balint, Interim Director of Collections & Research at Olana, Joan Damiani, Hudson artist and gallerist, and Hudson artist Ken Young. Many of the artists are from the Hudson Valley region, while others come from other parts of New York State, and some from New Jersey or New Hampshire. One artist comes from Quebec. On Friday and Saturday from 8 am to 4 pm, the artists will be painting in the landscape at Olana, and available to visitors. At 6 pm on Saturday, the public is invited to join the artists for a reception at the Wagon House Education Center where the works will be on display for the first time, and cash prizes for Best in Show and Viewers’ Choice will be awarded. On Sunday, the finished artworks will be moved to Seventh Street Park in Hudson where they will be available for viewing and purchase. Also on Sunday, a Quick Draw contest from 2 to 3 pm awards prizes to both professional and non-professional artists who are given one hour to create a work of art (See Quick Draw description below.) Plein Air concludes with an artist appreciation reception from 5 to 7 pm at Caldwell Gallery, 355 Warren Street. Tours of the historic 1874 Hudson-Athens Lighthouse – Sponsored by the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society – This is the last lighthouse tour of the season. – On the tour, visitors will learn about life on the lighthouse in the 1930s from the daughter of the last civilian lighthouse keeper, who served as keeper from 1930 to 1949. Artful Hike at Olana: Frederic Church’s Letters + 19th-Century Ballads – Brian Dewan, Catskill visual artist and musician, presents “a performative artwork, where notions of authorship, ownership, possession, private space and public space are addressed through a poetical essay woven in between reading aloud and singing with accordion accompaniment.” – The one-mile hike will be along one of Church’s carriage roads – Dewan has chosen his favorite letters by Church and in turn gives voice to Church’s sensibilities, sense of humor, feelings, and artistic process. Exhibition Openings – BAR-CAROLLE – The French artist Zoé Bellot, now based in Hudson, will be in residence at the Hudson Opera House from October 8 through November 13. In this unique residency, Bellot will publicly transform two historic pianos from the soon-to-be-restored performance hall into one-of-a-kind piano bars and magical operatic shadowboxes. When completed, the front of each piano will be repurposed into a traditional bar concession and permanently placed in the newly restored theater to serve beverages to attendees. The back of each piano will include shadow boxes and small figurative dioramas. BAR-CAROLLE is inspired by the famed French opera Les Contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffman) by the German-born French composer Jacques Offenbach. The most famous aria in the opera, and the inspiration for the residency, is entitled barcarolle. One of the pianos features shadow boxes from the opera, while the other piano features shadow boxes reflecting the history of the Hudson Opera House.
In addition, Bellot’s Bon Voyage!, an exhibition of beautifully crafted music boxes inspired by popular myths, proverbs, poems, and other writings, will also be on display. Quick Draw – The Olana Partnership is holding a Quick Draw event on Warren Street in Hudson as part of the 5th Annual Plein Air event happening over Columbus Day weekend. Quick Draw is a fun and informal way for artists and the general public, including children, to make art in Plein Air fashion on the streets of Hudson. The competition is open to all skill levels and ages. Any style, any medium, any subject is acceptable, from cartoons to formal architectural renderings to still life, it just has to be completed within one hour. In this event, professional and amateur artists, the general public, and kids make art side by side. An 8 ½ x 11 canvas will be provided at registration, but participants should bring their own materials beyond that. Both Sketch, at 701 Warren Street and Spotty Dog Books & Ale at 440 Warren Street, will be extending a 10% discount to all Quick Draw artists. Registration is from 1 to 2 pm at Seventh Street Park. Judging will take place on the steps of City Hall at 520 Warren Street from 3:15 to 3:45 pm by NYS Assemblywoman Didi Barrett, Mayor Tiffany Martin Hamilton, and Hudson Opera House Executive Director Gary Schiro. The 11th Annual Raymond Beecher Lecture – Taking Time to Look: The Landscape Films of Peter Hutton – Scott MacDonald, Visiting Professor of Art History at Hamilton College, and author of 14 books on independent cinema, presents the work of filmmaker Pater Hutton, the foremost Hudson River film artist of the past half-century, who passed away in June, 2016. North by South: A Farm Feast by Lil’Deb’s Oasis and Letterbox Farm – Carla Perez-Gallardo and Hannah Black, start-up restaurateurs from Lil’ Deb’s Oasis, team up with Letterbox Farm to host a celebratory evening of dinner, music, and drinks, beginning with signature cocktails, local brews and live music served up in the farm’s herb and flower garden. The Spotty Dog Occasional International Short Film Festival – Spotty’s sort-of-annual, one-night-only festival of films that are under 10 minutes long – An informal and raucous film festival for the masses; no panels of judges or prizes. Shop for Olana – The Hudson Business Coalition joins The Olana Partnership to introduce an easy way for local businesses to support Olana’s programs. This Sunday, participating businesses with the program decal in their windows will donate a percentage of their proceeds on Sunday to Olana/s education programming.
