Dying to Know: Ram Dass & Timothy Leary – Centers on a 1995 meeting and filmed interview at Timothy Leary’s home in Los Angeles – Leary has announced that he is dying of cancer and intends to approach his condition with the same curious enthusiasm… that marked the rest of his life…Visiting him is his old friend and Harvard collaborator Ram Dass (nee Richard Alpert), now an esteemed spiritual guide steeped in Eastern and Western religious traditions …Their wise exchange offers food for thought as the filmmakers revisit the history and impact of two remarkable lives.

The Witness – In March 1964 Kitty Genovese was repeatedly attacked on a street in Kew Gardens, Queens.  Her name became synonymous with urban apathy after 38 eyewitnesses did nothing while an attacker stabbed her to death…Forty years later, her brother Bill, who was 16 at the time of his sister’s death, decides to re-examine the details of the crime.  In the process, he makes startling discoveries about the crime that transformed his life, condemned a city, and defined an era.

Indian Point – Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant looms just 35 miles from Times Square.  With over 50 million people living in close proximity to the aging facility, its continued operation has the support of the plant’s operators and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.  At the same time it has stoked a great deal of controversy in the community, including a vocal anti-nuclear contingent concerned that the kind of disaster that happened at the Fukushima nuclear plant could happen here….Director Ivy Meeropol presents a balanced argument about the issues surrounding nuclear energy and offers a startling reality check for our uncertain nuclear future.

The Fits – “…a meditation on movement as seen from the perspective of adolescent girls.” – Toni becomes fascinated by the dance team that practices at a local community center.  One day the dance captain faints during practice.  By the end of the week most of the girls on the dance team suffer from episodes of fainting, swooning, moaning and shaking in a seemingly uncontrollable catharsis.  Toni fears “the fits” but is equally afraid of losing her place just as she’s found her footing – She is caught between her need for control and her desire for acceptance.

Kamikazi ’89 – A film by Wolf Gremm – In his last film role, legendary German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder plays Jansen, an expert cop living in a dystopian future where a mysterious organization known as The Combine controls all media.  After The Combine’s headquarters receives several bomb threats, Jansen is tasked with infiltrating the nefarious conglomerate. – In German with English subtitles

Ancram Opera House presents cabaret artist Carol Lipnik, winner of the Broadway World 2015 New York Cabaret Award for Best Alternative Cabaret Show – Ms. Lipnik is a regular at cabaret hot spots in NYC including Joe’s Pub and Pangea and has also performed as part of Weimar NYC and, locally, at Bard Spiegeltent.  Lipnik’s music evokes a shadow-world of mysterious, often misunderstood creatures, from sideshow freaks and b-movie monsters to love’s obsessive victims.  In a recent review of her show, Stephen Holden of The New York Times wrote, “What separates Ms. Lipnik from every other conjurer of the otherworldly is her phenomenal voice.
