Films at TSL:

Thelma – Thelma, a shy student, has left her religious family in a small town on the coast of Norway to study at a university in Oslo.  While at the library, she experiences a violent seizure.  Soon after, she finds herself intensely drawn toward Anja, a beautiful student who reciprocates Thelma’s powerful attraction.  Thelma becomes increasingly overwhelmed by her intense feelings for Anja.  As it becomes clearer that her seizures are a symptom of supernatural abilities, Thelma is confronted with tragic secrets of her past, and the terrifying implications of her powers.  In Norwegian with subtitles.

Harry & Snowman – This film follows the Cinderella story of Dutch immigrant Harry deLeyer and his transformative relationship with a broken down Amish plow horse named Snowman that he rescued off a slaughter truck.  In less than two years, Harry and Snowman would go on to win the triple crown of show jumping, beating the nation’s blue bloods and traveling the world together as they became the media darlings of the 1950s and 60s.  Their chance meeting at a Pennsylvania horse auction saved them both and crafted a friendship that would last a lifetime, as told by 86-year old Harry, firsthand.

The Florida Project – Set on a stretch of highway just outside the imagined utopia of Disney World, the film follows six-year-old Moonee and her rebellious mother over the course of a single summer.  They live at The Magic Castle, a budget motel managed by Bobby (William Dafoe) whose stern exterior hides a reservoir of kindness and compassion. – “Warm, winning, and gloriously alive…a poignant look at childhood.”

Wonderstruck – Based on Brian Selznick’s critically acclaimed novel.  Ben and Rose are children from two different eras who secretly wish their lives were different.  Ben longs for the father he has never known, while Rose dreams of a mysterious actress whose life she chronicles in a scrapbook.  When Ben discovers a puzzling clue in his home and Rose reads an enticing headline in the newspaper, both children set out on quests to find what they are missing that unfold with mesmerizing symmetry.

Felicite – The film follows a singer working in a bar in Kinshasa, DR Congo, whose life is thrown into turmoil when her son falls victim to an accident.  To save him, she sets out on a breakneck race through the streets of Kinshasa, a world of music and dreams.  Franco-Sengalese director Alain Gomis paints an unforgettable portrait of a woman who will not accept compromise, who tackles everything head on, and who refuses to give in no matter what. – In Lingala and French with subtitles

The Paris Opera – “…tells the story of life behind the scenes of one of the most prestigious performing arts institutions in the world.” – In French with subtitles

The Divine Order – Winner of Best Narrative Film at the Tribeca Film Festival – The film is set in Switzerland in 1971 where despite the worldwide social upheavals of the previous decade, women were still denied the right to vote. – In Lingala and French with subtitles

Brimstone and Glory – The National Pyrotechnic Festival in Tultepec, Mexico is a site of festivity unlike any other…revelry engulfs the town for days….a celebration that anchors a way of life built around a generations-old business of making fireworks by hand. – In Spanish with subtitles

Holidelic – The brainchild of Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter, producer, actor, dancer and Bruce Springsteen sideman Everett Bradley, Holidelic puts a fresh spin on holiday cheer, through lively holiday party tunes, outrageous costumes, and a theatrical stage show. Unsilent Night Hudson 2017 –In partnership with Wave Farm, Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night returns to Hudson for its second year.  Last year Unsilent Night  made its Hudson debut as part of Winter Walk 2016.  Unsilent Night is an original composition by Phil Kline, written specifically to be heard outdoors in the month of December, always as a free event.  It takes the form of a street promenade in which the audience becomes the performer.  Each participant gets one of four tracks of music.  Originally the music was played using only cassette tapes in boomboxes, but as vintage boomboxes have become harder to find, more people use smartphones with portable speakers to blast the music.  Together, all four tracks comprise Unsilent Night.  Visit unsilentnight,com for more information. – This year, led by the composer Phil Kline himself, participants will gather in Hudson’s Public Square (aka Seventh Street Park) at Warren and Seventh Streets and march to Hudson’s Promenade Hill, at the foot of Warren Street for the parade’s culmination.  This year’s parade route celebrates Hudson’s lesser traveled alleys and enclaves, winding through corridors and byways that shade the city’s historic streetscape.  All are invited to participate.  To do so, arrive at the Public Square no later than 6:45 pm with a boombox or smart phone with external speakers.  (If you plan to use your smartphone, it is recommended that you visit unsilentnight.com/participate before the event to download a track or the Unsilent Night app.)  A limited supply of boom boxes will be available to borrow on a first-come first-served basis.  Participants will begin marching just after 7 pm.  The event will be broadcast live on WGXC 90.7 FM, and on your device at www.wgxc.org  – Information at unsilentnight.com or call the WGXC Hudson studio at 518-697-7400 – 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm – Seventh Street Park (The Public Square), Seventh & Warren Streets

Christmas Eve Service at the First Presbyterian Church on Warren Street in Hudson will also serve as the congregation’s celebration of the re-opening of the historic church since the emergency repair of the building’s roof. During the period when the building could not be occupied, services were held in borrowed spaces.  Pastor Kathryn Beilke said: “We particularly want to invite all those who opened their doors to us while we were without a building.  The hospitality we received on all fronts has truly been the definition of community.”  Service at 5 pm – First Presbyterian Church, Corner of Warren and Fourth Streets

Djelloul Marbrook’s Hudson Photos – A Video Installation  – The Hudson Area Library is featuring a video installation of “Hudson: Through the Lens of Djelloul Marbrook” viewable at the back of the library where the History Room is located. – Djelloul Marbrook, poet and local resident, has been photographing Hudson and observing its architecture, people and transformations for years and he has gathered a collection of these photos for viewing.  Marbrook’s Far from Algiers (2008, Kent State University Press) won the 2007 Wick Prize and the 2010 International Book Award for poetry. He also won the 2008 Literal Latté fiction award and four honorable mentions in fiction from New Millennium Writings. He is the author of six books of poems and six of fiction, and four more books of poems and three of fiction are forthcoming in 2018. His poems have been widely published in such journals as American Poetry Review and Barrow Street and collections such as New Millennium’s 2017 anthology, Red Sky (the 2016 Sable Books anthology about violence against women), and Dove Tales, the 2016 Writing for Peace anthology. A retired newspaper reporter and editor and a U.S. Navy veteran, he grew up in New York and lives in Germantown with his wife Marilyn. He maintains a lively presence on Facebook and Twitter. Many of his poetry books are available at the library.  This installation will be on display through December and is viewable during library open hours and is wheelchair accessible.
