Climate Smart Communities Taskforce Initiatives -to Help Promote Clean Energy and Save Our Residents Money

The Climate Smart Communities Taskforce has been engaged in several initiatives to help promote clean energy and save our residents money.

  • The Clean Heating and Cooling Initiative provides information about home energy audits, improved insulation and more efficient heating and cooling with heat pumps.  While these improvements may be expensive, there are rebates and tax incentives that can make them more affordable for every income level.  Information is available at https://cleanheat.ny.gov
  • Installation of a heat pump requires a permit, and residents should reach out to our Code Enforcement Officer at (518) 398-7571 or [email protected] for more information.  Please note that the Gallatin Town Board passed a resolution on July 18, 2023 waiving the permit fee for heat pumps that are installed by a NYSERDA – certified contractor.
  • The Community Solar Campaign is currently underway for Gallatin homeowners and renters who do not have solar panels on their property, and can save up to 10% on your electricity bill.   During this campaign, anyone who signs up with Solstice Energy will receive a $50 bonus and there are no fees or long-term commitments to sign up.
  • Virtual information sessions presented by Solstice will be held at 6:30 pm on July 26 and July 31. RSVP to get the Zoom link here)!

  • The Town of Gallatin is participating in an initiative with Columbia County and the Cornell Cooperative Extension called Climate Adaptation and Resiliency Planning (CARP) to help us identify climate-related risks in our community and develop plans to adapt to our changing climate and/or mitigate those risks through smart planning and zoning laws.  There will be opportunities for Gallatin Residents to have input into this process through public meetings and surveys.  More to come!
