Amphibian Migrations and Road Crossings (AM&RC) Project
Dear Gallatin Neighbor:
Gallatin’s Conservation Advisory Council (CAC) is inviting you to participate in the Amphibian Migrations and Road Crossings (AM&RC) Project, part of the Hudson River Estuary Program, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).
The forests of Gallatin – and we have a lot of them – are inhabited by a group of amphibians that winter in the ground among our trees and breed in our temporary wetlands called woodland or vernal pools. These amphibians are species of conservation concern as many are threatened. When the weather conditions are right in late winter or early spring, wood frogs and salamanders migrate from the forests to the woodland pools to mate and lay eggs. They often cross roads and driveways, leading to their death.
This 5 minute video is a great introduction to the Project. Take a look!
The CAC is forming a group of volunteers for Gallatin. Join us in finding migration locations, documenting migrating amphibians and helping them cross the road.
Training is part of participation. We are hosting a Virtual Training at the Gallatin Town Hall on Wednesday February 19, 5:30-7:00 pm. Some of the things you’ll learn are how to identify different species and how to document data for the project. Please let us know if you can make it so we can prepare enough hardcopy materials. RSVP at [email protected].
An in-person volunteer training session is available on Saturday February 15, 9:30am-12:30pm in Acra, Green County. (snow date Feb. 22) Because space is limited, DEC needs you to Register to attend,
If you’re interested in learning more about the CAC, staying up to date on our projects, or finding ways to be involved, please visit our website, GallatinCAC.org and join our email list.
We’re looking forward to seeing you!
Eli Arnow (Chair, Gallatin CAC)
