Artist and Friends Community Potluck Dinner – To celebrate the artist community through monthly potluck dinners by sharing artwork and exploring creativity as a spiritual practice – Visual artists, writers, dancers, filmmakers and their friends are all welcome.  Please bring a dish to share or a give a donation – Organizer Christine Hales will be presenting the program – This month the group will have a discussion/dialogue after viewing several short videos on artists and spirituality. The videos are:  An interview with painter Agnes Martin; “Painting with the Spirit” from Tokyo; “Waterfall of Creativity” from Italy; and “Making Painting Great Again,” a video of a recent art opening in New York City – In addition, Terry Fugate-Wilcox, a NYC/Hudson transplant, will be sharing his work.  He is an NEA laureate with creations in the collections of The Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Australia, NYC parks and other museums. Exhibition Opening – Francine Hunter McGivern |&The Frank Institute @ CR10  present The Birds & the Bees – An installation from Harrison Atelier – The installation proposes a locus of cohabitation for pollinators and humans.  A suite of drawings, molds, and prototypes traces the development of panels for a multi-species façade system.  Panels test out varied materials and aperture size in an ongoing exploration of new dwelling typologies for local cavity-nesting birds and solitary bees.  This is part of a series of Harrison Atelier speculative building projects that explore human/non-human species cohabitation in the Anthropocene period. – On view through July 24 – Information by email to [email protected] – 4 to 6 pm – The Frank Institute @ CR10, 283 County Route 10,  Linlithgo (between Routes 9G & 31)

Garden Conservancy Open Day – Visit The Tilden Japanese Garden in New Lebanon, Rockland Farm in Canaan, and the garden of Linda Horn in Spencertown, where Pondside Nursery will be on site with a pop-up plant sale – There is an admission fee at each garden – Information and directions at www.gardenconservancy.org/events/all-events/columbia-county-ny-open-day-10 – 10 am to 4 pm

Mrs. Greenthumbs Day Garden Tour – To honor the memory of Hudson’s most talented, most exuberant, and most famous gardener, Cassandra Danz, who had a local radio show, appeared on national television, and wrote books as Mrs. Greenthumbs –  The tour is a great opportunity to see Hudson gardens hidden behind houses and fences, many only approachable through an alley entrance.  Fifteen gardens located throughout the city will be open to visitors from 11 am until 4 pm – A map showing the location of the gardens is online at http:/mrsgreenthumbsday.blogspot.com/ and will be available on the day of the tour at Nolita Café, 454 Warren Street; Red Dot, 321 Warren Street; and The Secret Gardener, 250 Warren Street.  Maps will also be available in all participating gardens.  Entrances to the gardens are marked by balloons. – The Garden Tour is free and open to the public.  Visitors may show their appreciation and support for the preservation and beautification of Hudson’s public spaces by making a contribution to the Mrs. Greenthumbs “Hedge Fund” at any of the gardens. – 11 am to 4 pm

Aoife O’Donovan – With Special Guest Haas Kowert Tice –  Boston native O’Donovan is best known as the lead singer and songwriter of the alt-bluegrass band Crooked Still for the last ten years – She has performed with Yo-Yo Ma on his “Goat Rodeo Sessions” project, the Boston Pops Orchestra and the Utah Symphony Orchestra.  During the summer of 2013 she toured with Garrison Keillor and his “A Prairie Home Companion Radio Romance Tour.”  Instrumental string-band trio Haas Kowert Tice is rooted in traditional music, but veers easily into jazz, classical, and rock territory without skipping a beat – Information at 828-4800 or helsinkihudson.com – 7 pm – Helsinki Hudson, 405 Columbia Street

The Voodoo Orchestra North  – The Voodoo Orchestra North, led by legendary jazz drummer, improviser and composer Bobby Previte and featuring many great upstate New York musicians, plays a regular series of performances devoted to exploring the music of Miles Davis’s eternal electric jazz-funk masterpiece, “Bitches Brew.”  – One of the greatest works of the twentieth century, “Bitches Brew” (1970), changed the entire landscape of not only jazz but rock, funk, soul, and pop as well.  Hailed as a masterpiece upon its release, it has proven even more influential in the fullness of time.  “The Voodoo Orchestra North starts where ‘Bitches Brew’ left off, and begins anew,” says Previte.  “Even better than the real thing,” says local music critic Seth Rogovoy. – Information at 828-4800 or helsinkihudson.com – 8 pm – Helsinki Hudson, 405 Columbia Street

MacHaydn Mondays – Elvis is in the building! – Elvis, and more, will be in the building for the Mac-Haydn Monday show, when Bill McGrath and Meg Morrow present A Night of Elvis and Friends:  Favorite Songs of Favorite Stars from the Past – The couple are popular Capital District entertainers who play to packed houses throughout the area.  Well known for his Elvis Presley looks, sounds, and swivel, McGrath is an energetic performer who doesn’t limit his musical style to just “The King.”  You’ll hear Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and many more.  Ms. Morrow adds her own considerable talents to the program.  This popular Monday series is now in its fourth year.  The rest of the series is scheduled for August 1 and 15 – Information, schedule and tickets at www.machaydntheatre.org or 392-9292 – 8 pm – Mac-Haydn Theatre, 1925 Route 203, Chatham

Christ Church Episcopal presents a summer lunch hour music program, its own version of “Bach’s Lunch,” every Wednesday during July and August.  Various composers are featured and  both sacred and secular works are presented.  Bring a bag lunch and listen to recordings of music by popular composers on an exceptional sound system that will convince you that you are listening to a live orchestra and singers.  While listening to the “concerts,” the audience is also invited to enjoy the ambience of the beautiful historic church.  Cold beverages will be available, and hostesses will be on hand to answer questions.
