 New Hudson Area Library

Saturday, April 9 – Join the celebration and see Hudson’s new 21st Century library.  The dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting for the new Hudson Area Library in the former Armory building at the corner of Fifth & State takes place at 10 am this Saturday, April 9.  After the ribbon cutting, the library will be officially open to the public and all are invited to take a look inside.  The Senior Center on the second floor and the Perfect Ten After School program space on the third floor, both accessible by stairs or elevator, will also be open and welcoming visitors.  10 am – Hudson Area Library, 51 North Fifth Street (More details below.)

Reading/Signing/Screening – Author Barney Hoskyns will read from his new book, Small Town Talk: Bob Dylan, The Band, Van Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Friends in the Wild Years of Woodstock, followed by a screening of David McDonald’s film, Woodstock Can’t Get There From Here, a feature-length documentary that chronicles the rise and eventual fall of the American counterculture through events in the Town of Woodstock. This is the first time the film will be shown publicly in its entirety, since it was shut down by legal threats ten years ago. No Home Movie – Chantal Akerman‘s final film is a portrait of her relationship with her mother, Natalia, a Holocaust survivor and familiar presence in many of her daughter’s films.  In French with English subtitles.

One More Time – Aspiring rock star Jude is stuck in a rut, relegated to recording commercial jingles and lost in a series of one night stands.  Evicted from her Brooklyn apartment, she moves into the Hamptons home of her wealthy father, an over-the-hill, Sinatra-esque crooner angling for a musical comeback.  Jude is forced to confront her troubled family relationships and her wobbly career.

Marguerite – A film by Xavier Giannoli that won eleven 2016 Cesar Award nominations – The film takes place at the beginning of the Golden Twenties.  It is a party day at Marguerite Dumont’s castle.  Every year music lovers gather at the castle around a great cause.  Marguerite’s passion is music.  She sings wholeheartedly, but she sings terribly out of tune….

Marinoni/ The Fire in the Frame – Giuseppe Marinoni found his calling when he transitioned from champion cyclist to master bike craftsman.  Bur after years hunched over toxic fumes, his passion almost killed him.  At age 75, feeling in top shape, he decided to attempt the world hour record for his age group, all on a bike he built with his own hands almost 40 years ago.  Described as “incredibly entertaining!”  – – Q&A with the filmmaker on Friday and Saturday

Rabin: The Last Day – This tribute to Nobel Peace Prize winner Yitzhak Rabin on the twentieth anniversary of his death sheds light on an ever-growing crisis of hate in Israeli society today – Directed by Amos Gitai – In Hebrew with English subtitles

Embrace of the Serpent – Set in the Colombian Amazon, the film tells the story of two Western explorers who search for rare botanical species in this remote and lush South American jungle.  Based on the diaries of two white men who traveled in the region, one in 1909, and the other 30 years later.  An Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film. – In Spanish and Amazonian tribal languages with English subtitles.

Artists’ Homes and Studios as Archive and Romance – The last in the 2016 series of Sunday Salons, presenting today’s most engaging speakers on the subject of the Hudson River School.  This year’s series has focused on artists’ engagement with architecture.  Dr. Wanda M. Climate: What’s the Big Deal? – A Community Conversation – The Columbia County Chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby is hosting community conversations throughout Congressional District NY 19 around Earth Day to build public support for climate action.  The group will be highlighting interests and concerns each community would like to hear about.  Each event will allow ample time for questions and answers. – These meetings are seen as a good way to meet other CCL members, to learn the latest news about climate, national and international momentum toward reducing carbon emissions, and how CCL is building political will toward putting a price on carbon. Monday, April 18

The Hudson Conservation Advisory Council is beginning a multi-year project to inventory the City’s open spaces and natural resources.  As a contribution to this effort, specialists from the NY Department of Environmental Conservation’s Hudson River Estuary Program have prepared summaries of existing data about the condition of natural habitats within the city, the challenges we face from severe climate events, and the state of our wetlands, streams and water systems.  They’re coming to discuss these findings, and how this kind of information can help us plan for Hudson’s future.  Join in learning about the natural environment of our city – Information at 404-892-4964 – 6:30 pm – new Hudson Area Library, Corner of Fifth & State Streets
